Troy is een jonge man wiens geliefde vrouw overlijdt. Maar Troy, die niet met dit soort van verdriet kan omgaan in dit stadium van zijn leven, klapt op haar begrafenis helemaal dicht. Hij is elk gevoel voor richting verloren, tot op de dag dat hij met de post een brief ontvangt van zijn vrouw, die deze geschreven heeft nog voor ze ziek werd. In deze brief vraagt ze hem om voor zijn tante Hilda een veranda te bouwen. Met niets anders te doen, rijdt Troy naar de plaats in de woestijn waar zijn tante woont. Daar ontmoet hij Hilda samen met een groep van gekscherende oude dametjes, en Bobby, een soort van wijze cowboy. Zij maken het Troy gemakkelijker om zijn plaats te vinden om verder te gaan en om te gaan met zijn verdriet. Zij openen Troy's ogen door hem te bewijzen dat hij niet de enige is die deze pijn moet doorstaan.
